is183 – “Collage Architecture” course

People often say that in architecture “form follows function.” In this course we will reverse that premise, start with form, and update this aphorism to say, “form follows form.”

Working with collage elements – bits of pieces of left over cardboard, fabric, plastic tube, rope, photographs – anything really – we will build things and explore how the character of those things can be worked with and assembled into architecture. Movement will be included in the array of collage elements that can be assembled to make architectural form. The goal of the course will be to explore how form encourages, suggests, allows, or, perhaps, inhibits movement and use of space. The discovery of utility and function possible in, around, or because of a form, coming after the making of form, will link the sculptural and spatial work we will do to architecture
